A First-Visit Guide to the Museum: Galleries, Timing and Practical Tips

Gallery order, best times, ticket options and handy tips for first-time visitors to Ömürhan Cultural Museum.

If you are visiting Ömürhan Cultural Museum for the first time, you won't want to pick the wrong time or order and end up tired. The museum is built around the courtyard of a 17th-century han and consists of five themed galleries. With enough planning it can be toured comfortably in two hours; if you want to go into detail it takes half a day.

When to go?

The quietest times are Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 09:30 and 11:00. At weekends afternoons get busier with school and family groups. On Fridays the museum is open until 20:00, and the evening offers a dim-lit atmosphere away from the crowds. On Tuesday mornings a 'quiet hour' is run: sound and light levels are reduced, creating a suitable setting for visitors with sensory sensitivity.

In what order should you tour the galleries?

The tour proceeds by numbered gallery. Gallery 1 'Clay and Fire' opens the visit with the ceramics collection; Gallery 2 'Metalworkers' shows copper and silver work; Gallery 3 'Thread and Pattern' tells the story of Bursa silk; Gallery 4 'Pen and Paper' presents manuscripts and marbling; Gallery 5 'Daily Life' invites you into a Republican-era kitchen. If you are short of time, focus on Galleries 1 and 3.

Ticket and guide options

Buy your ticket online so you don't queue at the desk. A full ticket is 280 TRY, student and 65+ 140 TRY, and the family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) 650 TRY. Children under 7 and disabled visitors with their companions enter free. The guided general tour is 120 TRY and the audio guide 60 TRY, in Turkish and English.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes; the galleries have stone floors.
  • Photography without flash is allowed, but tripods and selfie sticks cannot be used.
  • Large bags and suitcases go in the cloakroom; you may take a small bag with you.
  • You can rest in the courtyard café and buy handmade ceramics and publications from the shop at the end.
  • Taking the tram to the 'Setbaşı' stop is the easiest way to get here.

If you are coming with children

You can pick up discovery backpacks free of charge at the desk. The task booklet inside sends children on a small hunt through the galleries. On Sundays there is a children's tour at 12:00 and at weekends a ceramics workshop at 11:00.

To plan your visit, take the 'Plan Your Visit' quiz on the site and find the route that suits you. See you at the museum.

Accessibility

All galleries are reached by lift; wheelchairs and folding stools are lent free at the desk. Guide dogs are welcome. For sign-language tours, booking ahead is enough.

The café in the museum courtyard is an ideal place to rest midway through the tour, serving tea, Turkish coffee and local desserts. At the end you can buy ceramics, postcards and catalogues from the shop, finishing the visit knowing ticket income goes to the care of the collection.
